
The ban prohibits any open burning within 100 feet of any structure regardless of the issuance of a burning permit or stated town open burning ordinances. This ban includes and is not limited to recreational fires, portable outdoor fireplaces, burning of yard debris and outdoor fire pits.
Furthermore, any burning over 100 feet from a structure is also affected by this burn ban notice as the NC Forest Service is placing a total burn ban for Wilkes County and surrounding areas effective at 6pm today.
This burning ban authorized the Town of Wilkesboro FD Fire Marshal, is per North Carolina Fire Code Chapter 3, Section 307 which states this ban can be enforced and burning "shall be prohibited when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous" and prevent for potential for increased fire hazards due to extremely dry weather conditions.
This burn ban will remain in effect until an adequate amount of rainfall is received to alleviate the current drought and fire weather conditions that are present in our area. A lifting of this burn ban will only take place following the guidance and recommendations of the NC Forest Service.
