The Wilkes Celebrate America 250 Parade will start July 4 at 5:00 pm in Wilkesboro and end in North Wilkesboro with events at the North Wilkesboro Train Depot, followed by the annual Fire Truck Parade at 8 and fireworks at dusk.

The North Wilkesboro Rotary Club, organizer of the parade, is asking parade participants to enter floats featuring historical figures, historical events and/or iconic American symbols.

The parade is sponsored by the governments of Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro and Wilkes County.

“Lots of red, white and blue. We would love to see bands and church choirs walking or on a float singing patriotic songs and create floats celebrating religious freedom, Get creative,” said Fred Costello, North Wilkesboro Rotary Club chairman.

“We want to celebrate America 250 in all possible ways. We are asking for antique, vintage and special autos to participate. Maybe pace cars from the beginning of the North Wilkesboro Speedway…. If you have a moonshine still that was part of our heritage, put it on a float,” he said.

Cosrello added, “If you have the ability to create a reenactment of Paul Revere riding a horse; George Washington on a float being saved by Christopher Gist; reading the Declaration of Independence; Abraham Lincoln reading the Gettysburg address. Or dress up as Daniel Boone or Christopher Gist and join the parade.”

He said other ideas include painting or model of a famous historical place, battle or event.

Costello said there is no charge to enter the parade and entries will be judged for winners in various categories.
