WHERE TO TAKE NON-CURBSIDE RECYCLABLE ITEMS?    
  • Single Use Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, etc.) - Wilkes Co Landfill

  • Lead Acid Batteries - these must be recycled by NC Law - Advance Auto, AutoZone, and O'Reilly's Auto Parts Stores, Wal-Mart automotive, Wilkes Co Landfill

  • Rechargable batteries (tool's, cell phones, etc.) - Lowe's

  • eBike Batteries - call any area cycling shops to inquire about the brands that location can recycle.

  • Cell Phones - Most cell phone stores, Lowe’s, ecoATM at Wal-Mart

  • CFL or fluorescent bulbs - Lowe’s, Wilkes County Landfill, Waste Management recycle by mail

  • Clothing - consignment or thrift stores, donate, or sell

  • Dishes, ceramics, glassware - consignment or thrift stores, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Facebook marketplace, etc.

  • Eyeglasses - Goodwill store,  North Wilkesboro Lion's Club, or check with your eye doctor’s office.

  • Furniture - consignment or thrift stores, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Facebook marketplace, Freecycle, letgo, offerup, Oodle, Trove Market, Bookoo, etc.

  • Flower bed plant plastic containers such as plastic plant pots, plant trays, and plant tags - Lowe’s in the garden department. 

  • Mercury-containing thermostats, barometers, and thermostats - Wilkes County Landfill, Waste Management recycle by mail  

  • Home burned CD or DVD - Trash, donate for craft projects

  • Original music CDs or Cassette tapes and DVD or VHS movies - consignment or thrift stores or music reseller for reuse  

  • Pallets - donate for Craft & Building projects

  • Plastic shopping bags - Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Lowe’s, Walmart, Kohl’s 

  • Plastic spoons, forks, and straws - Trash 

  • Prescription empty bottles - Trash

  • Prescription medication disposal - Walgreens, Wilkes County Sheriff’s office, and the North Wilkesboro Police department.

  • Printers - Manufacturer, Wilkes County Landfill

  • Real Christmas trees - Residential curbside collection available within the town limits.

BULK items collection

 The Town collects bulky items Monday through Friday.

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Residents will be allowed 1 free bulk item collection per year. Any other bulk collections within the same year will be assessed a fee. Also, there is a fee, published in the Schedule of Fees, associated for disposing of non-bulk material with the bulk collection.

  • White goods/appliances and other large bulk items not practical to containerize will be collected.

  • To request bulk item collection, the town asks that residents complete the online form or call the Public Works at 336-838-0188. If no answer, please leave a message with name, address and telephone number so residents can be notified when the bulk items will be collected by the Town of Wilkesboro. 

  • Bulk item collection is for residential units only.  Business bulk item collection will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Weight limits and fees will apply to the collection of bulk goods. If a customer fills a truck with bulky items to such an extent that it requires a trip to the landfill, the customer will be required to pay for the tipping fee and mileage which will be assessed at the current rate. 

  • Unacceptable bulkyunapproved electronics, or banned landfill items items will not be collected. The citizen must take to the landfill for disposal themselves.

  • Approved electronics or large loads - please contact Public Works for an appointment.

  • After notification and scheduling with Public Works, a truck will be delivered and, at the discretion of the Public Works Director, loaded by the resident. A service fee will be assessed as listed in a fee schedule approved by the Town Council. Each resident must complete and sign a Town of Wilkesboro Truck Policy Statement. Charges for collection will be invoiced. 

  • Non-residential illegal dumping or burning of bulky items is not permitted.

What Bulky Items CANNOT be collected curbside? Residents should consult with Wilkes County Landfill for disposal. 

X markCommercial tree trimmers, lawn care services, contractors, builders, etc. shall dispose of their own limbs, trees, leaves, shrubbery, underbrush, building materials & refuse before leaving their job sites. If not removed, the removal is the property owners responsibility to dispose of.

The sanitation department is a division of Public Works and is responsible for collecting and disposing of garbage, recycling, and many other items. The monthly fee citizens pay on the utility bill covers these items for residential and approved business accounts. Other recycling documents, options, and online forms are also listed on this page. 

Bulk containers/dumpsters are NOT an option for the town. Institutional & business customers are required to have a dumpster if they exceed more than two 96-gallon rollout carts for trash. Any apartments, group of apartments, condominiums, mobile home park, or any structure containing six or more dwelling units shall provide dumpsters for the purpose of trash collection. 

Recycling is mandatory for all residential and all commercial accounts, whether you have a town or other paid provider.

What Can't be Recycled?  

REQUIREMENTS:  
  • This recycling program is required for all residential and all commercial customers.

  • Regular curbside recycling collection is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays bi-weekly. Bi-weekly curbside recycling will be provided by the Town and the recycling is on a different day than your weekly scheduled curbside trash collection. blue cart is for recycling - green cart is for trash

  • Each customer will have one recycling container: one 96-gallon town provided blue recycle cart. 

  • If the commercial customers have bulk containers/dumpsters for trash, then the business should comply with recycling dumpsters.

  • Please consult with Public Works Director and then contact a solid waste provider to see what bulk recycling is available. Dumpsters shall be labeled for each product and what to deposit in each bulk container/dumpsters.

  • do not bag recyclablesRecycling is commingled in the rollout cart. It’s easy - No bagging! No sorting is required! 

  • Recycling schedules are available online at wilkesboronc.org, at the town hall and are also mailed annually with the utility bills.    

  • Recycling items should follow G.S.130-309.10 and the town’s solid waste policy.

  • All recyclables need to be clean, free of food and debris and broken down flat.

  • The recycling containers shall be set out for collection only on the designated day for each premise. If you forget to set it out for collection, it shall wait for the next week’s collection schedule or the customer may take recyclables to a town’s recycling center. See the section in this publication for recycling center locations inside and outside of town limits.

  • The cart can be set out after 6:00 pm the evening prior of collection and must be at the curb by 6:00 am on collection day. The rollout cart and bin shall be removed from curb or alley by 7:00 pm the day of collection. Carts are NOT permitted to remain at the collection point continuously. No exceptions.

  • The recycling containers shall be placed by the street within line 10 feet from the curb or where the rollout cart was delivered to the customer.

  • All carts shall be easily accessible without having to unlock or lock the door, gate or similar obstacle, climb steps and steep inclines or encounter a vicious animal.

  • Recycling containers shall not block or impede the traveled portion of a street.

  • Customers who are physically disabled or have typographic site restrictions for collection may get an exemption. A physician’s note is required and may be re-verified any point during the agreement and all persons living in the home should be physically disabled. All exemptions are on a case-by-case basis and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director. The town reserves the right to continue or discontinue this service at any time. All exempt customers must comply with this agreement.

  • Failure to comply will result in penalties, fines, trash collection not be collected in a timely manner, and/or further actions being taken to resolve issues. All penalties, fines and remedies are listed in the Solid Waste Policy and the schedule of fees.
