HERITAGE SQUARE SPLASH PAD

View our Park Maps here Heritage Square splash pad

Town of Wilkesboro opened the Heritage Square Splash Pad that is sponsored by Carolina West Wireless and located on the Wilkes Heritage Museum front lawn, known as Heritage Square. It is located across North Bridge from the Carolina West Wireless Community Commons and Wilkes Communications Pavilion (stage).

Heritage Square was designed to evoke the stately lawn of the historic courthouse while also offering gathering spaces for all ages. The Veterans Monument and Bricks honoring military service are prominently placed along with a historic canon. The splash pad features 29 jets, colorful lighting, and has tile work arranged in an “Ohio Star” quilt pattern to reflect the region’s artisan heritage.

To activate the splash pad, users simply step on a circular pad near the benches. The 5-minute operation cycle features a variety of jet heights and shapes. Jets along the outer edges of the play area were designed at levels appropriate for young children.

Additional information about splash pad policies and rules can be found here and at the kiosk adjacent to the splash pad. PortaJons are available in the Community Commons for splash pad visitors.

We hope you and your family enjoy the Splash Pad!!

Cub Creek is a 203-acre park that borders downtown, but its trail system extends much farther south.  It is the town’s primary park, containing a variety of recreation features. While numerous facilities are currently available, the park continues to develop:

  • In 2023, the Inclusive Playground is open.

  • In 2022, new fishing pier was constructed and is in coordination with the Inclusive playground.

  • In 2022, tennis courts and 2 pickle ball courts were re-surfaced.

  • In 2021, six new pickle ball courts were constructed.

  • In 2019, Cub Creek and the Town of Wilkesboro were named an N.C. Mountain Heritage Trout City.

Inside the park boundaries is the award-winning restored Cub Creek Stream that is designated as trout water which is hatchery supported and named an N.C. Mountain Heritage Trout City. Cub Creek Park and stream bring is a popular spot for families to visit, picnic, walk, fish, or allow the kids to wade through the water and play. Along the creek, you can find some rather quiet spots to meditate and relax with a great book, just bring a blanket.

The park is home to some immaculate walking tracks and is popular with many users daily. Future plans include the Yadkin River Greenway and the Town of Wilkesboro plan to link this park’s walking trails to the growing greenway system, giving Cub Creek users access to more recreation beyond its boundaries.

This park is well-manicured and is open sunrise to sunset for everyone's enjoyment. The town has also partnered with numerous other agencies to bring many other amenities to fruition and Thank you to all of these organizations and agencies. You can find the links below all the details.

Our cantilever bridge is located between Call Farm & Jail Break loopsThe Town of Wilkesboro has opened four trails at Cub Creek Park through a partnership with Brushy Mountain Cyclist Club (BMCC) in 2017. The BMCC mountain bikers are responsible for the trails at W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir and Cub Creek Trails are some of the best mountain biking in the southeast, according to their website and riders alike.

Citizens can walk or mountain bike these trails and they are open sunrise to sunset.  Please no ebikes.

  • CALL FARM - 3.6 miles - Suble terrain with lots of bermed turns. A great beginner mountain bike riders, hikers & runners. Video1   Video2

  • JAILBREAK - 0.7 miles - Mostly flat trails with a few tricky turns for riders. Video

  • PERKINS PLACE - 2.6 miles - Lots of twists and turns with a little more climbing. Video1   Video2

  • TORNADO ALLEY - 1.4 miles - it will be a casual creekside trail with several boardwalks and bridges mixed with some steeper terrain. Video

Occasionally the trail closed signs have to be posted during wet weather and we ask that you not ride on the trails during closures to keep damage to a minimum. We cannot keep the integrity of the trails without your help. The trail status will be posted on the Cub Creek Park's Facebook.

We would like to give our thanks to the High Country Council of Government for GPS plotting of the trails and trail signs (right) that were done as part of an Eagle Scout's Project.

CUB CREEK COMMUNITY GARDEN

Garden Layout    Garden Rules

Cub Creek Park Community Garden

Our community garden is maintained through the active participation of the gardeners themselves. Fresh gardens allow our citizens to grow their own food which provides fresh produce and plants into their everyday lives for healthier living. Other benefits are satisfying labor, self-reliance, connection to the environment, the opportunity for multigeneration and cross-cultural connections, neighborhood improvement, and a sense of community.

The gardener leases a garden plot each season which may or may not be the same from year to year. Handicap raised beds have been added as well. Cub Creek Community Garden’s goal is to be a place that invites neighbors, friends, and families to communicate and relate through a shared experience.

Wilkes Master Gardeners signThrough the aid of the Master Gardeners, Cub Creek Community Garden offers tips and advice on how to make your own garden plot better, whether you are a beginner or expert. What is a Master Gardener and would you like to become a Master Gardener?  To find out how click here.

Besides the gardening activities, other advantages include a series of special work days, email updates on garden conditions, and having Master Gardener’s to provide a helping hand. Where else could you get a deal like this!
